L-Citrulline

Also known as: Citrulline, L-Citrullin, Citrulline malate, CitMal

Raises nitric oxide more reliably than arginine does — a genuine, modest blood-pressure effect and the one pump supplement that is not marketing.

Dosing & protocols by goal

Rough orientation ranges as reported in harm-reduction literature — not an individual treatment plan. Doses are individual and open-ended; frequency depends on the ester or half-life.

Blood pressure support

Basic

Dose

3000–6000 mg / day

Frequency

1× daily

Cycle length

Ongoing; effects build over weeks

The blood-pressure effect is small — a few mmHg in trials — and takes weeks to appear. Useful as one factor among several, not as a substitute for an antihypertensive when readings are genuinely high.

Training performance

Basic

Dose

6000–8000 mg citrulline malate

Frequency

45–60 min before training

Cycle length

As needed

Most performance trials used citrulline malate at 8 g, which contains roughly 5–6 g of actual citrulline — check what the label is counting.

Erectile function

Basic

Dose

1500–3000 mg / day

Frequency

1× daily

Cycle length

Ongoing

A real but weak effect via the same nitric oxide pathway tadalafil uses. It is not comparable in strength to a PDE5 inhibitor.

Supraphysiological doses carry significant health risks and are not legal without a medical indication. This information serves education and harm reduction, not as a usage recommendation. Accompanying blood work and — where relevant — a post-cycle plan (PCT) are essential. See the disclaimer.

Side effect & countermeasure

Typical problems and what you can do to reduce harm — at a glance. Does not replace medical monitoring.

Problem

Citrulline or citrulline malate — the labels are not comparable

Countermeasure

Citrulline malate is usually a 2:1 blend, so 8 g contains around 5.3 g of citrulline and the rest is malic acid. Products list either the blend weight or the pure amount, which makes doses look inconsistent between brands. Compare the actual citrulline content.

Problem

Expecting it to replace a blood-pressure drug

Countermeasure

The effect is genuine and small — in the range of a few mmHg. Against cycle-driven hypertension, where the drivers are water retention and rising hematocrit, this is a supporting measure. If readings stay high, telmisartan or amlodipine is the answer, not more citrulline.

Problem

Combining it with tadalafil or nitrates

Countermeasure

All three work on the nitric oxide pathway. With tadalafil the additive drop is usually mild but real. With nitrate medication, this combination is one to avoid without medical advice.

Problem

Taking arginine instead

Countermeasure

Arginine is the more intuitive choice, since it is the direct precursor — but most of an oral arginine dose is destroyed in the gut and liver before it arrives. Citrulline bypasses that and raises blood arginine more effectively than arginine itself. This is the rare case where the indirect route wins clearly.

Overview

Citrulline is one of the few supplements in the pre-workout category where the mechanism, the trials and the marketing broadly agree. It is not dramatic, but it does what it claims.

It matters here for a second reason that gets less attention: blood pressure is the most consistently damaged marker on cycle, and citrulline is one of the few supplements with a measurable — if small — effect on it.

Mechanism of Action

Nitric oxide relaxes the smooth muscle of blood vessels, widening them and lowering resistance. The body makes it from arginine, so arginine is the obvious supplement — and it largely does not work, because a large share of an oral dose is broken down by arginase in the gut and liver before it reaches circulation.

Citrulline takes a detour. It is absorbed intact, passes the liver untouched and is converted to arginine in the kidneys. The result is that oral citrulline raises blood arginine more effectively than oral arginine does.

The consequences are wider vessels, better perfusion, a lower blood pressure, and the subjective pump that made it popular.

Where It Fits Here

Blood pressure. A few mmHg is not nothing when it comes on top of cardio, controlled sodium and a hematocrit kept in range. It is also not a treatment. Anyone whose readings sit consistently high on cycle needs an actual antihypertensive, and citrulline alongside it is fine.

Training. The performance data is reasonable for repetition volume and reduced soreness, mostly from citrulline malate at around 8 g. Whether the malate contributes anything of its own is unclear.

Erectile function. The same pathway tadalafil acts on, several orders of magnitude weaker. Worth knowing as context rather than as an alternative.

Note the overlap: citrulline, tadalafil and the antihypertensives all lower blood pressure. Individually mild, collectively they add up, and the answer is a blood-pressure cuff rather than a guess.

Side Effects & Risks

  • Very well tolerated; digestive upset at high doses is the main complaint
  • Additive blood-pressure lowering with antihypertensives and tadalafil
  • Not to be combined with nitrate medication without medical advice
  • No relevant effect on hormones, liver or kidneys

Blood Work & Monitoring

  • Blood pressure — the value this is aimed at, measured with a home cuff
  • No specific lab monitoring is required
