This is the central correction. Theanine alone shifts EEG activity and modestly lowers subjective stress, and that is most of what holds up. The reproducible cognitive findings — faster attention switching, less susceptibility to distraction — come from the caffeine combination. Bought as a standalone focus supplement, it will disappoint, and the disappointment is predictable from the literature.

Adding 100 mg theanine to a pre-workout carrying 300 mg caffeine is not the combination that was studied. Roughly two parts theanine to one part caffeine is the pattern the data comes from. Products advertising the pairing frequently include a token amount of theanine against a large caffeine load and rely on the ingredient name doing the work.

A cup of green or black tea holds somewhere around 5–25 mg theanine against 30–50 mg caffeine — approximately the inverse of the ratio used in trials. Drinking toward 200 mg of theanine means taking several hundred milligrams of caffeine on the way. The calm attributed to tea is not a dose effect at those numbers.

The most important caveat. Tremor, restlessness and a racing pulse are feedback about how much stimulant is on board. Theanine blunts them while the adrenergic and cardiac load remains, which makes a dose that previously felt excessive feel manageable. Anyone who responded by pushing caffeine higher has used it to remove a warning rather than a problem.

Theanine does not alter caffeine's clearance. A 4 pm dose still has half of itself circulating at 9 pm whether or not the jitter was smoothed out, and deep sleep still suffers. Timing is the only lever that works there, and no evening theanine dose substitutes for it.
Overview
L-theanine is an amino acid that occurs in tea leaves and effectively nowhere else in the diet. It is not built into proteins and has no nutritional role.
Its position on this list is unusual. Nearly everything catalogued here works by adding something — a signal, a substrate, a hormone. Theanine works by taking something away, and the honest version of that sentence has to start with the limitation: taken by itself, it does very little for cognitive performance. The trials that carry this compound almost all gave it alongside caffeine.
Mechanism of Action
Theanine is a structural analogue of glutamate, the brain's principal excitatory transmitter. It crosses the blood-brain barrier using the transporter for large neutral amino acids and acts weakly at glutamate receptors, dampening excitatory signalling rather than adding inhibition on top of it.
The observable consequence is an increase in alpha activity, the 8–12 Hz EEG band associated with relaxed alertness. That band is distinct from the slower rhythms of drowsiness, which is the mechanical reason theanine does not sedate. It appears within 30–45 minutes and is dose-dependent across roughly 50–200 mg.
The frequently repeated claim that theanine raises GABA and dopamine rests on rodent work using administration routes and quantities that do not map onto a capsule. Treat it as unresolved.
One negative detail matters more than any of the positive ones: theanine has no action at adenosine receptors. Caffeine's alertness runs entirely through those, which is why one compound can be removed from the picture without the other going with it.
What It Actually Delivers
- Alone, for cognition: small and inconsistent; a number of trials find no effect
- Subjective stress and anxiety: a modest reduction, largest in people who score high on trait anxiety and smallest in those who do not
- Alpha activity: measurably increased — a physiological signal, not a performance result, and often reported as though it were one
- With caffeine: improved attention switching and reduced susceptibility to distraction, at doses of caffeine that would otherwise be unpleasant
- Cardiovascular response: the caffeine-induced blood pressure rise is blunted, and part of the heart rate rise with it
- Sleep: better rated sleep quality, with sleep onset largely unchanged
Half-life is around an hour. Nothing here accumulates and nothing here needs a loading period.
What It Takes Away From Caffeine
The caffeine page describes a compound with the best performance evidence available and a set of costs attached: anxiety, tremor, restlessness, a higher heart rate and blood pressure. It offers nothing against any of that. This is the answer to that gap, and it is the only reason this page exists.
Roughly two parts theanine to one part caffeine — 200 mg against 100 mg is the common construction. What the combination trials found was not a bigger stimulant effect but a cleaner one: the same alertness with less of the edge around it, plus attention measures that in several studies came out better than caffeine alone.
The picture is not unanimous. At least one well-run trial found the blood pressure attenuation clearly while finding no synergy at all on mood or cognition, and raised the possibility that theanine slightly offsets caffeine's alertness rather than leaving it untouched. The cardiovascular part of the claim is on firmer ground than the cognitive part.
The distinction worth holding onto is what kind of correction this is. Taurine under clenbuterol replaces something the drug depletes. Theanine replaces nothing — it opposes one arm of caffeine's action while the other arm continues. Which means the load is still there. A person who no longer feels 400 mg of caffeine is carrying 400 mg of caffeine, and the tremor that stopped was information.
Taken Alone
There is a narrow case for it without caffeine: before a specific stressor, or in the evening at the end of a day built on stimulants, where the intent is lower arousal rather than sleep.
What it does not do is flatten. Ashwagandha lowers cortisol over weeks and takes some drive with it in a subset of people; theanine acts within the hour, does not touch cortisol meaningfully and produces no emotional blunting or next-day residue. That makes it the low-consequence option in this category — and also the low-magnitude one.
Anyone reaching for it because focus is poor should check the more boring variables first. Sleep duration and caffeine cut-off time move attention further than any dose on this page.
