Overview

Taurine is a sulphur-containing amino acid that, unlike most, is not built into proteins. It circulates freely and accumulates in heart muscle, skeletal muscle, brain and retina — tissues with high electrical activity.

In this field it matters for one specific reason: beta-2 agonists deplete it, and the resulting cramps are one of the most common complaints under clenbuterol.

Mechanism of Action

Taurine regulates the flow of calcium in and out of muscle cells and stabilises cell membranes. Muscle contraction and relaxation both depend on calcium moving correctly; when taurine is depleted, that regulation degrades and cramps follow.

Clenbuterol accelerates taurine depletion. This is not a theoretical concern — it is the documented reason for the cramps that so many people experience, and it explains why loading magnesium and potassium so often fails to help. The deficiency being corrected is the wrong one.

Beyond that, taurine has been studied for blood pressure, glucose metabolism and endurance performance. Those findings are more modest and less consistent than the cramp connection.

Two to three grams daily, split across two doses, for the duration of a beta-2 agonist. It also appears in general supplementation at one to two grams.

One practical note: energy drinks contain taurine, typically around a gram per can, which is why people assume they cover it. In this context they are the wrong vehicle — the caffeine alongside it adds to the cardiovascular load that clenbuterol is already producing. Powder is cheap and delivers the dose without the stimulant.
