Plain turmeric powder barely works
Countermeasure
Turmeric root is roughly 3 % curcuminoids, and curcumin on its own is absorbed at around 1 %. A teaspoon of kitchen turmeric delivers a dose far below anything trialled. What matters is a standardised extract in a formulation built for absorption — phytosome, liposomal, micellar or with piperine.

Black pepper extract raises curcumin absorption by inhibiting the enzymes that would break it down — and those same enzymes clear other substances. Blood levels of other medications can rise as a result. Relevant with statins, tadalafil, cabergoline and blood-pressure drugs; the same category of problem as berberine.

Curcumin has a mild antiplatelet effect. Alongside aspirin, nattokinase, omega-3 at high doses or an anticoagulant, this adds up. Worth stopping before planned surgery.

Overview
Curcumin has genuine anti-inflammatory activity and is one of the better-studied plant compounds. It also has a bioavailability problem severe enough that most of what is sold does very little, which makes it the supplement where reading the label matters most.
Mechanism of Action
Curcumin inhibits NF-κB, a central switch in the inflammatory cascade, and also COX-2 — the enzyme ibuprofen and similar drugs act on, though far more weakly. The result is a reduction in inflammatory signalling rather than a painkilling effect.
The problem is everything before that. Curcumin is poorly soluble in water, poorly absorbed in the gut, and what does get through is rapidly conjugated by the liver and excreted. Free curcumin in blood after a standard dose is close to undetectable.
Why the Formulation Decides Everything
This is the part worth understanding, because it separates a working product from an expensive one:
- Plain extract — cheapest, absorbed worst. Standardised to 95 % curcuminoids, but the absorption problem remains.
- With piperine — black pepper extract blocks the liver enzymes that would eliminate curcumin, raising blood levels substantially. Cheap and effective, with the interaction caveat below.
- Phytosome (bound to phospholipids) — well studied, considerably better absorbed.
- Liposomal or micellar — the highest measured absorption, correspondingly priced.
A dose figure without the formulation is not interpretable. This is also why trial results vary so widely: they were not testing the same exposure.
Where It Fits Here
Joint pain and recovery are the honest use cases, particularly during heavy training blocks.
But there is a diagnostic trap worth naming. Joint pain during a cycle very often has a hormonal cause: an aromatase inhibitor pushing estradiol below the range where joints work properly. That pain feels like inflammation and responds poorly to anti-inflammatories, because it is not inflammation. Trenbolone and long-term high IGF-1 have their own joint effects.
Reaching for curcumin without checking estradiol means treating a symptom while the actual cause runs on. Measure first.
