Overview
Trestolone, almost always called MENT, has an unusual origin. It was developed as a male contraceptive, and its defining property served exactly that purpose: it suppresses the body's own hormone axis completely while continuing to supply androgenic activity itself.
For the bodybuilding context this makes it one of the most potent substances available — reported as several times stronger than testosterone at the same weight. That potency is also its central practical risk, because dosing schemes from other compounds cannot be transferred to it.
Mechanism of Action
Trestolone is a 19-nortestosterone derivative with an additional methyl group at position 7. That modification protects it from breakdown by 5-alpha-reductase and increases binding to the androgen receptor considerably.
Two consequences follow. Its anabolic effect is disproportionately strong relative to the dose, which is why MENT is dosed in single-digit milligrams where testosterone is dosed in hundreds. And it aromatizes to a potent estrogen, more readily than testosterone does — water retention and gynecomastia risk are correspondingly pronounced and are the reason an aromatase inhibitor is practically mandatory here rather than optional.
Unlike other 19-nor compounds such as nandrolone or trenbolone, MENT provides androgenic activity of its own at a level that maintains normal function. This is precisely why it was interesting as a contraceptive: it shuts down the axis but does not leave the user androgen-deficient.
Typical Context
MENT is used in mass phases, over six to eight weeks, and is a substance for people with substantial experience — not because of tradition, but because the dosing scale is genuinely unforgiving. Ten to thirty milligrams a week is the reported range; someone who applies a testosterone-style dose here overshoots by more than a factor of ten.
The acetate ester requires daily injection of very small volumes, which is where the second practical risk lies: at this concentration, small measurement errors translate into large dose errors. Calculating the actual concentration of the product before the first injection is not a formality here.
There is essentially no long-term human safety data. What exists comes from contraceptive trials at doses far below those used in this context.
