Stanozolol (Winstrol)

Also known as: Winstrol, Winny, Winni, Stanozolol, Stanabol, Winstrol Depot

DHT derivative available both orally and injectable, used for hardness in the final weeks — notorious for dry, painful joints and for the most severe lipid deterioration of any common compound.

Substance family

DHT derivatives

Derived from dihydrotestosterone. They do not convert to estradiol, so no water retention — but also no estrogen of their own. Finasteride is useless against their hair loss, because they are already past the step it blocks. Hardest on the lipid profile.

Dosing & protocols by goal

Rough orientation ranges as reported in harm-reduction literature — not an individual treatment plan. Doses are individual and open-ended; frequency depends on the ester or half-life.

Medically supervised

Was used for hereditary angioedema and, historically, for anemia. Replaced by better-tolerated therapies today.

Definition phase — Intermediate

Intermediate

Dose

30–50 mg / day

Frequency

Oral split into 2 doses, injectable daily

Cycle length

Kept short, primarily because of liver strain and the lipid profile. Longer runs sharply increase both.

Joint problems and liver values deteriorate markedly, while the visual gain is minimal.

Supraphysiological doses carry significant health risks and are not legal without a medical indication. This information serves education and harm reduction, not as a usage recommendation. Accompanying blood work and — where relevant — a post-cycle plan (PCT) are essential. See the disclaimer.

Side effect & countermeasure

Typical problems and what you can do to reduce harm — at a glance. Does not replace medical monitoring.

Problem

Extreme drop in HDL — the most severe of any commonly used compound

Countermeasure

Values below 10 mg/dl are documented under stanozolol. Cardio, omega-3 and citrus bergamot as the base; with strongly deteriorated values, ezetimibe or pitavastatin under medical guidance. Measure a baseline and keep the duration short — this effect is not manageable by supplements alone. If a statin is started, CoQ10 belongs alongside it — statins deplete it through the same pathway.

Problem

Dry, painful joints and increased risk of tendon injury

Countermeasure

Stanozolol reduces synovial fluid and collagen synthesis while strength rises quickly — a combination that overloads tendons. Do not push maximal loads during use; keep progression conservative even when it feels easy.

Problem

Considerable liver strain from 17-alpha-alkylation

Countermeasure

Both the oral and the injectable form are 17-alpha-alkylated — injecting it does not spare the liver, a widespread misconception. Check ALT, AST and GGT before and during use, avoid alcohol, do not combine with other orals, limit to 4–6 weeks. TUDCA at 500–1000 mg daily addresses the cholestatic mechanism directly; NAC supports the antioxidant system alongside it.

Problem

Markedly elevated blood pressure

Countermeasure

Measure at home regularly. Cardio, control salt and water balance; medically, telmisartan, amlodipine or lisinopril, and low-dose tadalafil.

Problem

Estradiol falls too low, compounding the joint problem

Countermeasure

Stanozolol does not aromatize. Low estradiol worsens exactly the joint symptoms the substance already causes — never combine with an aromatase inhibitor without measuring.

Problem

Accelerated hair loss with a genetic predisposition

Countermeasure

As a DHT derivative it acts directly on the hair follicle; finasteride is ineffective here. Anyone with a predisposition is choosing the wrong substance. What does apply here is minoxidil, which works independently of DHT, or a topical receptor blocker such as RU58841 or topical spironolactone; ketoconazole treats the scalp inflammation androgens add on top.

Problem

Severe injection-site pain with the aqueous suspension

Countermeasure

The injectable form is a crystal suspension in water and is considerably more painful than oil-based preparations. There is no pharmacological advantage over the tablet — the liver burden is identical.

Overview

Stanozolol, universally known as Winstrol, is a DHT derivative with an unusual structure: a pyrazole ring fused to the steroid skeleton. It is one of the few anabolic steroids available both as a tablet and as an injection, and one of the few where that choice makes no difference to the liver.

In the bodybuilding context it is used in the last weeks before a competition for a dry, hard appearance. Its side-effect profile is considerably harsher than its reputation as a "cutting compound" suggests — stanozolol produces the most severe lipid deterioration of any commonly used substance, and its effect on joints and tendons is a genuine injury risk rather than a comfort issue.

Mechanism of Action

Stanozolol binds to the androgen receptor and does not aromatize; no estradiol arises from it. The pyrazole ring makes it resistant to enzymatic breakdown, and the 17-alpha-alkylation makes it orally available.

The point most commonly misunderstood: the injectable form is 17-alpha-alkylated as well. Unlike other injectables, where an oil-based ester bypasses the liver on first pass, stanozolol carries the liver-relevant modification in both forms. Injecting it therefore does not reduce hepatic strain in any meaningful way — a belief that persists widely and leads people to run it longer than they otherwise would.

Its effect on connective tissue works in two directions at once. Stanozolol reduces the production of synovial fluid and appears to inhibit collagen synthesis, while muscular strength increases rapidly. Tendons and ligaments adapt far more slowly than muscle under normal circumstances; here they are actively weakened while the load rises. This is the mechanism behind the tendon ruptures repeatedly described in connection with this substance.

Typical Context

Stanozolol appears in the last four to six weeks of a preparation phase, orally or injected, essentially always alongside a testosterone base. The short duration is not caution for its own sake — liver values and lipid profile deteriorate quickly enough that longer runs become difficult to justify.

The visual effect depends on body fat, as with drostanolone. At higher body fat, the substance delivers its side effects without a visible result.

Side Effects & Risks

  • Extreme drop in HDL, marked rise in LDL — the most severe of any common compound
  • Dry, painful joints; increased risk of tendon and ligament injury
  • Considerable liver strain in both the oral and the injectable form
  • Markedly elevated blood pressure
  • Estradiol too low, worsening the joint symptoms
  • Accelerated hair loss with a genetic predisposition
  • Severe injection-site pain with the aqueous suspension
  • Suppression of natural testosterone production
  • Acne, oily skin

Blood Work & Monitoring

  • Lipid profile (LDL, HDL, triglycerides) — the key value; baseline, during and 6–8 weeks after
  • Liver values (ALT, AST, GGT) — baseline and during use, regardless of the form used
  • Blood pressure — measured at home, regularly
  • Estradiol (sensitive) — watch for levels that are too low
  • Total/free testosterone — to check the base
  • Hematocrit & hemoglobin

Harm-Reduction Notes

  • Injecting does not spare the liver — both forms are 17-alpha-alkylated
  • Limit duration to 4–6 weeks; liver values and lipids deteriorate quickly
  • Do not attempt maximal lifts during use; tendon load is the underlying risk, and strength rises faster than connective tissue can adapt
  • Measure a lipid baseline before starting, otherwise the extent of the change cannot be judged
  • Do not combine with other oral compounds; liver strain is additive
  • Avoid alcohol during use
  • Do not add an aromatase inhibitor without measuring; low estradiol worsens the joint symptoms
