Ephedrine raises heart rate and blood pressure through direct adrenergic stimulation. Measure both rather than judging by feel; palpitations, chest tightness or an irregular pulse mean stop. Pre-existing hypertension, arrhythmia or cardiac disease rule it out, and that includes the elevated blood pressure most people carry on cycle.

Clenbuterol, yohimbine and high-dose caffeine all drive the same system. Combining them multiplies the cardiac load rather than adding to it. Ephedrine plus clenbuterol is a particularly poor idea, and either alongside a diuretic in contest week is the arrhythmia scenario behind documented deaths.

The thermogenic effect fades within a few weeks as receptors desensitise. Raising the dose restores little and increases the cardiovascular risk. Cycling it in blocks is the standard response.

With a half-life of three to six hours, an afternoon dose still acts at night. Nothing after 4 pm. Poor sleep undermines the deficit the stimulant is meant to support, and it raises cortisol against you.

The ephedra ban had real reasons

Countermeasure

Ephedra supplements were banned in the US after deaths and serious cardiovascular events, including in young, apparently healthy users. Those cases typically involved high doses, other stimulants, dehydration or exertion in heat. The compound is not uniquely lethal at controlled doses — but the ban was not regulatory overreach either.

Overview

Ephedrine is the original evidence-based fat burner, and unusually for this category, the evidence is good. The ECA stack — ephedrine, caffeine, aspirin — was studied properly in the 1990s and produced measurable fat loss beyond diet alone.

That is the honest starting point. What followed was a wave of high-dose supplements, serious cardiovascular events, and a US ban in 2004 that reshaped the whole supplement industry.

Mechanism of Action

Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic: it stimulates alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors directly and also promotes noradrenaline release. The result is the classic adrenergic picture — higher heart rate, higher blood pressure, raised metabolic rate, suppressed appetite and increased fat mobilisation.

Caffeine potentiates this by blocking the enzyme that would break down the intracellular signal, which is why the combination works better than either alone. That synergy is real and is the reason the stack exists.

The thermogenic effect is measurable but modest — a few percent of daily energy expenditure, in the same range as clenbuterol. It does not replace a deficit.

Where It Sits Against Clenbuterol

Both are adrenergic, both raise metabolic rate modestly, both strain the heart.

Ephedrine has the shorter half-life at three to six hours against clenbuterol's day-plus, which makes it easier to control and easier to keep out of the evening. It also has actual human trial data, which clenbuterol largely lacks outside its respiratory indication.

Clenbuterol is more beta-2 selective, so the cardiac effect is somewhat less direct — though at the doses used, that distinction is thinner than it sounds.

Neither is a large effect. Both carry a real cardiovascular cost.

The Aspirin Question

The original stack included aspirin, on the reasoning that it would prolong the thermogenic response.

Most people have dropped it, and that is reasonable: the evidence for its contribution was weak, and daily aspirin carries a bleeding risk that is not worth taking for a marginal effect. If aspirin is being taken for cardiovascular reasons, that is a separate decision with its own logic.
